What is a Coworking Space?

A coworking space is a shared office where people who don't work for the same company come together to get things done. Think of it as a coffee shop that took itself more seriously. Fast wifi, actual desks, no barista judging you for nursing the same oat latte for four hours.

You pay a daily, weekly, or monthly fee, show up, plug in, and work. You might sit next to a developer, a copywriter, an accountant, and someone who describes their job as "building a personal brand." The mix is part of the appeal. Unlike a private office you can't afford and a café you can't focus in, a coworking space exists in that sweet spot between structure and freedom.

Most have the basics: reliable internet (non-negotiable), a mix of hot desks and private nooks, meeting rooms you can book, and decent coffee. The good ones have windows. The great ones have a rooftop. For digital nomads, coworking spaces aren't a nice-to-have. They're infrastructure. Same as finding a pharmacy or a supermarket when you arrive somewhere new.

Why Coworking Space Matters for Digital Nomads

When you're working from a new city every few months, you lose your default workspace constantly. You can't always work from your coliving bedroom without going stir-crazy. You need somewhere to take calls that isn't a hostel lobby. You want to be around other people who are also working, not scrolling.

Coworking spaces solve the loneliness problem in a low-pressure way. Nobody expects you to make friends. But you do — because you're all doing the same weird thing of building a working life in a city that isn't your home. A lot of digital nomads find their best local connections not through city meetups, but by accidentally becoming regulars at the same coworking spot and eventually saying "want to grab lunch?"

They also signal to your brain that it's work time. That mental switch matters more than people admit.

In Madeira, the chapter had a running system: mornings at the house for whoever needed heads-down focus, afternoons at a coworking space in Funchal for calls and collaboration. What nobody expected was that the walk down together — 25 minutes through the old town — became the unofficial daily meeting. By the time people sat down at their desks, half the day's problems had already been talked through.

One afternoon, three guests ended up pitching each other on their projects over espresso in the break room. One of them got a client out of it. The coworking space didn't plan that. It just made it possible.
